Yaoundé (Cameroon)

The city of seven hills

In the heart of Cameroonian lands, Yaoundé is a cosmopolitan city whose landscape is punctuated by the relief. With its hills, plateaus and valleys, the city centre is divided into popular districts in the lower city, and administrative and residential districts on the heights. Discover this colourful place! To feel the atmosphere and personality of a city, there is nothing like going to its market.

In Yaoundé, the Mokolo market is one of the largest, and is always crowded. Get ready to search through the stalls to find the item of your dreams! Mokolo is particularly renowned for its wide range of clothing. To recover from your emotions, go and taste the famous Ndolè, a typical Cameroonian dish made with bitter leaves, shrimps and peanuts.

In addition to its warm atmosphere, Yaoundé is full of sites to visit. Start with the Reunification Monument, and Notre Dame des Victoires Cathedral, with its triangular roof whose edges almost touch the ground. Another pride of the city is the sports stadium. This sports and cultural centre is a symbol of modernity. Yaoundé is a city full of life, whose heart beats like a million miles a minute. However, you will also find places of nature where you can relax.

Stroll through the public garden to the Charles Atangana monument, a mediator from the colonial era. Climb Mount Fébé to its summit! From up there, the view of the city is amazing; the surrounding houses mixed with the vegetation make a pretty scene. Another magical view is waiting for you from the eleventh floor of the Hilton Hotel; located in the Lake district, it is the lair of trendy young people and businessmen. In addition to its many museums and tourist sites, Yaoundé is the ideal starting point to discover Cameroon’s natural reserves.
